How to install shower valve extension kit

How to install shower valve extension kit

When we are working on a bathroom renovation or remodeling project, we often come across situations where shower valve extensions need to be installed, such as thicker walls, additional tile layers, or other structural changes. Only with the shower valve extension installed were we able to properly connect the shower valve trim to the existing plumbing.
Now we will provide a step-by-step installation guide to make sure you correctly install your shower valve extension kit by yourself.

Material preparation:

  • Shower valve extension kit (including extension sleeve and necessary fittings)
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pipe cutter or hacksaw
  • Plumber's tape (Teflon tape)
  • Pipe dope or thread sealant
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Rag or towel
  • Safety goggles
  • Gloves

Step 1: Prepare

Before starting the installation process, be sure to turn off the water supply to the shower system to prevent any water flow during the installation.

Step 2: Remove trim and existing valve

Using a screwdriver to remove the trim plate covering the shower valve, carefully unscrew it from the pipe and remove the existing valve.

Step 3: Measure and cut the extension sleeve

Take the extension sleeve provided in the kit and measure the depth needed to bridge the gap between the valve and the finished wall. Using a pipe cutter or hacksaw, cut the extension sleeve to the measured length. Make sure the cut is clean and even.

Step 4: Apply plumber's tape and thread sealant

Take the extension sleeve and apply plumber's tape (Teflon tape) to the threaded end. Wrap tape clockwise around threads to ensure a tight seal. Next, apply a thin coat of pipe dope or thread sealant to the threads to further strengthen the seal and prevent any leaks.

Step 5: Install extension sleeves

Carefully screw the extension sleeve onto the existing pipe, making sure it is snug and aligned with the finished wall. Tighten the connection securely with an adjustable wrench. Be careful not to overtighten as this may damage the pipe.

Step 6: Install the new shower valve

Take your new shower valve and attach it to the extension sleeve. Again, use an adjustable wrench to tighten the connection firmly, but not with excessive force.

Step 7: Test for leaks

Once the valve is securely connected, turn on the main water supply to the shower. Carefully check for any leaks around the fittings and valves. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections slightly or apply additional thread sealant as needed until the leak is resolved.

Step 8: Reassemble the trim

After making sure there are no leaks, reinstall the trim plate onto the shower valve and secure with the appropriate screws. Make sure the trim is properly aligned and flush with the wall.

Step 9: Final inspection

Turn on the shower and test the function of the valve. Check that the hot and cold water is properly regulated and there are no unusual noises or problems during operation. If everything works as expected, we have successfully installed the shower valve extension!
